My name is Mark Farmer, owner of Southwest Mobility, Inc. in Mesa, Arizona. I have been a member of AZMESA for the past 5 years and serve as the current President. I have also served on the Executive board as the Treasurer and the Vice President. In my current position, I am also heading up the membership committee.

Membership in AZMESA has been such an invaluable tool and experience for myself and my company. I have become much more interconnected with other providers, manufacturers, independent representatives, payers, and the list goes on. The business associate relationships that have come from the different networking opportunities has proven to be a great asset to my business. Our current software vendor and billing company were relationships which started from an annual AZMESA conference. At the 2002 annual conference, our CIGNA speaker was a senior claims analyst. She took a power chair claim which was approx. 2 years old, and within a month, the claim was paid. We were ready to write off the whole amount. Instead, the profit from that claim alone has paid for several years of AZMESA dues! It's all about getting involved and networking with the right people and building relationships. I have been involved with several House Members meetings at their local offices discussing H.R.3559 and the negative impact that competitive bidding will have on our industry. Nearly half of our Congressman signed onto that bill in support of our industry. As a specialist in power mobility, my relationship with Pride Mobility(AZMESA associate member) and their government affairs department has proven very valuable. The constant email industry updates from AZMESA will keep your company and personnel better informed. The AZMESA state association is a member of AAHomecare. We also have a representative that serves on the Medicare DAC committee. This is a great state association with great networking opportunities amongst some very strong companies and individuals. The decision to join an industry association should provoke some thought. Like most decisions regarding our business, we look at what is the return? How will it help my business, will it help our employees, our patients? Is it worth the investment, the time? For our business the return has been there. It is a modest investment of both money and time but one that pays a lasting return.

Our membership has given us an avenue to build relationships in the community with other providers. It also helps us network with larger groups, associations and payers. We have made lasting relationships and contacts at Cigna, Noridian and CMS through the networking provided by AZMESA. Additionally association membership helps us keep the pulse of what is going on nationally as well as locally with legislation and reimbursement issues. Membership gives us a voice and legitimacy, when we raise concerns together with others in our business. So for our group the small investment over the years has been paying lasting dividends.
